It is no secret that the GLBT community has embraced social media sites. Perhaps it is due to the ability to create a safe space for communication to take place, but also as a result of the market’s general love of technology. My Space, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are all heavily infused with Gay and Lesbian groups and fan pages and although these mainstream sites do serve these needs, no one seems to have come up with a social media site for Gays that will really take off.
On a quick review of 4 Gay social media sites on alexa.com, those being Glee.com, Gaywallet.com, Connexion.org and Everyq.com, Glee.com is the only one that seems to show any evidence of a meaningful amount of traffic. So the Gays are either not interested in their own social media, or they just haven’t found one to satisfy their needs. The owners of Queerbook are hoping for the latter.
Reece Manley, the engineer behind Queerbook bought the domain back in 2004 with the plan of selling Gay and Lesbian books online. The site sat dormant for a number of years while Manley considered his options. Recently, after receiving a warning that the URL was about to expire, Manley happened to look at his analytics report revealing over 100,000 visitors to the site. He thought that visitors might have thought it was a German site, (queerbook.at) that seems to exploit Gays or perhaps people were actually looking for a Gay Facebook. “Either way, I see a need in the market for our niche of a pro-advocacy, non-porn networking site,” states Manley.
Queerbook.com presents itself as a premier GLBT social networking site. Their home page says that they plan to offer support and advocacy to the GLBT community. It appears as if the company is standing by their mission by offering to give $1 to Lambdapride.com for every member who signs on. Joining the site also gives members a chance to win a trip on RSVP Cruises.
Manley welcomes any potential challenge of copyright infringement from Facebook. “Facebook has allowed anti-gay groups to form and flourish on its pages. They hide behind the “right to freedom of speech” which, to me, does not grant a license to hate. Although their founder is gay, there are groups advancing the evangelical agenda of Gays living in sin just because of their nature,” states Manley.
“When it comes to social networking sites, greater percentages of gay and lesbian respondents say they are members of the following sites than straight respondents do (stated membership %s below)” according to a recent Harris Interactive/Witeck-Combs study.
Facebook—55% gay and lesbian vs. 46% heterosexuals
MySpace—43% gay and lesbian vs. 30% heterosexuals
LinkedIn—23% gay and lesbian vs. 13% heterosexuals
Twitter—20% gay and lesbian vs. 12% heterosexuals
Plaxo—9% gay and lesbian vs. 6% heterosexuals
To back up Queerbook’s projection of success with their new site, Manley and partners surveyed over 1,000 participants in Denver and Dallas. Most of the respondents were between the ages of 21-29 and have a yearly income between $40-$49,000. Results revealed that 69% use the Internet daily and 43% receive SMS (text) messages weekly. They view the term “Queer” favorably, love the new proposed “closet” mode and enjoy the idea of having multiple profiles.
“In three different ticks you can decide whether anyone could find you or have your name came up on a search engine as associated with the site. Then the contents/messages can be “protected” in the same way. They envision everyone having a public/professional profile and a “they know me” profile for more private information. If there is a demand for it, they will add a third level profile, all accessible through the same primary username and password”, explains Manley.
Queerbook seeks to distinguish themselves from other social media sites by basing their design on the research and providing a full media presence. In addition to the new options above, they are testing a weekly speed-dating forum. This forum will initiate one-minute chats, matched by interest, between unlinked users at a specific time once a week. “That one has been fun to see in demo,” according to Manley.
Queerbook.com plans to charge their members $3.99 per month which in itself might deter visitors from swaying away from their free sites. However, Gays do love gadgets, so the new functionality and design might just be the new horizon for Gay social media sites.

Metal wall decor is rich in styles and sizes, from latticework to wall sculptures like trees caught in a storm or wolves howling to the moon. But, though many people will incorporate metal wall decor in their gardens, they shy away from it at home. So here are imaginative ways in which metal wall decor can bring exotic beauty into interior decorating.
Metal Wall Decor over a Mantelpiece
Instead of the usual mirror or painting, consider hanging metal wall decor over your mantelpiece for an exotic focal point. Metal wall decor that depicts nature will tie in well with rustic or country decor, like trees, wildlife, or mountains. Metal wall decor that incorporates clocks with open mechanisms will add interest to a modern room. While lattice metal wall decor reminiscent of European villas will make a gorgeous edition to Tuscan or cottage decorating. And for small rooms which require a mirror to create the illusion of added light and space, metal wall decor curling around the border of a large mirror will achieve the best of both worlds.
Metal Wall Decor in a Bedroom
Set the mood of a bedroom with metal wall decor reminiscent of sleep or relaxation, playfulness or toys. For kids decor, metal wall decor with moving parts is especially fun, like a metal mobile hanging from the ceiling, or metal wall decor with moving gears, as well as animal metal wall decor like lizards or safari animals. For a soothing bedroom, sun, moon and star metal wall decor are a fun addition. While for a home office, metal wall decor of a hanging bridge or the Eiffel Tower add sophistication.
Metal Wall Decor on Tables
An ordinary ottoman can become a coffee table by setting metal wall decor over it to create a hard surface. Lattice metal wall decor in the shape of a rectangle is ideal for the purpose. And matching elements can be added to side-tables or pedestals to create a themed metal wall decor in all the room’s furnishings.
Metal Wall Decor in a Bathroom
In a bathroom metal wall decor can be more whimsical. Serenity wall decor depicting weeping willows or Asian blossoms will add grace and elegance, while metal decor fountains will add the soothing sound of water.
Complete your fun metal wall decor with a metal doorknocker or a metal weathervane.

These celebs took their weight loss to the extreme and had gastric bypass surgery. Like most of us there are celebrities who have struggled with their weight. Many of these celebrities, who are scrutinized in the public eye, have turned to weight loss surgery. We’ve all seen the photos, amazing before and after transformations thanks to gastric bypass surgery by celebs like Carnie Wilson, Roseanne Barr and Sharon Osbourne to name a few. Althought the transformations are amazing not all of the celebrities who get the surgery maintain the weight loss. People have to make changes in their lifestyle as well to be successful. Below are a few celebs who had the bypass surgery some maintained their weight loss while other put the weight back on.
Randy Jackson American Idol judge underwent gastric bypass surgery. Randy explained it was not about vanity: “I was having serious issues with becoming a diabetic. So thinking about how to do it, I tried all kinds of diets, everything under the sun. I was like: I really need to do something to nip this in the bud right now. It worked for me, but I hesitate to recommend it for people because it’s like a personal life decision. It’s a life choice because you change and alter your complete life when you do this.”
Sharon Osbourne had a gastric bypass surgery in 1999 and lost over 100 pounds. Her weight loss was not without problems however, and in 2006 she opted to have her gastric band removed to focus on her psychological problems with food.
Star Jones had gastric bypass surgery. She initially denied she had the surgery but later admitted it and said: “First, I didn’t know if the surgery would work. I had spent my entire adult life telling everyone that I was fine with the way I looked. I never thought I’d have to explain it. But the complete truth is, I was scared of what people might think of me.”
Roseanne Barr, in 1998 Roseanne had a gastric bypass. Roseanne waited eight months after surgery before telling anyone her weight loss was down to a gastric bypass operation. Roseanne managed to gain much of the weight she lost after surgery and now accepts she will never be slim. Roseanne joked “my stomach is the size of a walnut, yet I still gorge. I’m still fat and always will be. I don’t care”.
Carnie Wilson had her bypass surgery in 1999. Unfortunately she later regained quite a bit of this weight, partly as a result of her pregnancy.
Most of these celebs still struggle with their weight and have gained all they have lost. What do you think is gastric bypass surgery a solution to obesity or is the good old fashion dieting and changing your eating habits better?

The Pursuing Story is brought to the public by McLean VA Diet Center
CHICAGO — Should parents of extremely obese children lose custody for not controlling their kids’ weight? A provocative commentary in one of the nation’s most distinguished medical journals argues yes, and its authors are joining a quiet chorus of advocates who say the government should be allowed to intervene in extreme cases.
It has happened a few times in the U.S., and the opinion piece in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association says putting children temporarily in foster care is in some cases more ethical than obesity surgery.
Dr. David Ludwig, an obesity specialist at Harvard-affiliated Children’s Hospital Boston, said the point isn’t to blame parents, but rather to act in children’s best interest and get them help that for whatever reason their parents can’t provide.
State intervention “ideally will support not just the child but the whole family, with the goal of reuniting child and family as soon as possible. That may require instruction on parenting,” said Ludwig, who wrote the article with Lindsey Murtagh, a lawyer and a researcher at Harvard’s School of Public Health.
“Despite the discomfort posed by state intervention, it may sometimes be necessary to protect a child,” Murtagh said.
But University of Pennsylvania bioethicist Art Caplan said he worries that the debate risks putting too much blame on parents. Obese children are victims of advertising, marketing, peer pressure and bullying — things a parent can’t control, he said.
“If you’re going to change a child’s weight, you’re going to have to change all of them,” Caplan said.
Roughly 2 million U.S. children are extremely obese. Most are not in imminent danger, Ludwig said. But some have obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties and liver problems that could kill them by age 30. It is these kids for whom state intervention, including education, parent training, and temporary protective custody in the most extreme cases, should be considered, Ludwig said.
While some doctors promote weight-loss surgery for severely obese teens, Ludwig said it hasn’t been used for very long in adolescents and can have serious, sometimes life-threatening complications.
“We don’t know the long-term safety and effectiveness of these procedures done at an early age,” he said.
Ludwig said he starting thinking about the issue after a 90-pound 3-year-old girl came to his obesity clinic several years ago. Her parents had physical disabilities, little money and difficulty controlling her weight. Last year, at age 12, she weighed 400 pounds and had developed diabetes, cholesterol problems, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.
“Out of medical concern, the state placed this girl in foster care, where she simply received three balanced meals a day and a snack or two and moderate physical activity,” he said. After a year, she lost 130 pounds. Though she is still obese, her diabetes and apnea disappeared; she remains in foster care, he said.
In a commentary in the medical journal BMJ last year, London pediatrician Dr. Russell Viner and colleagues said obesity was a factor in several child protection cases in Britain. They argued that child protection services should be considered if parents are neglectful or actively reject efforts to control an extremely obese child’s weight.
A 2009 opinion article in Pediatrics made similar arguments. Its authors said temporary removal from the home would be warranted “when all reasonable alternative options have been exhausted.”
That piece discussed a 440-pound 16-year-old girl who developed breathing problems from excess weight and nearly died at a University of Wisconsin hospital. Doctors discussed whether to report her family for neglect. But they didn’t need to, because her medical crisis “was a wake-up call” for her family, and the girl ended up losing about 100 pounds, said co-author Dr. Norman Fost, a medical ethicist at the university’s Madison campus.
State intervention in obesity “doesn’t necessarily involve new legal requirements,” Ludwig said. Health care providers are required to report children who are at immediate risk, and that can be for a variety of reasons, including neglect, abuse and what doctors call “failure to thrive.” That’s when children are severely underweight.
Jerri Gray, a Greenville, S.C., single mother who lost custody of her 555-pound 14-year-old son two years ago, said authorities don’t understand the challenges families may face in trying to control their kids’ weight.
“I was always working two jobs so we wouldn’t end up living in ghettos,” Gray said. She said she often didn’t have time to cook, so she would buy her son fast food. She said she asked doctors for help for her son’s big appetite but was accused of neglect.
Her sister has custody of the boy, now 16. The sister has the money to help him with a special diet and exercise, and the boy has lost more than 200 pounds, Gray said.
“Even though good has come out of this as far as him losing weight, he told me just last week, ‘Mommy, I want to be back with you so bad.’ They’ve done damage by pulling us apart,” Gray said.
Stormy Bradley, an Atlanta mother whose overweight 14-year-old daughter is participating in a Georgia advocacy group’s “Stop Childhood Obesity” campaign, said she sympathizes with families facing legal action because of their kids’ weight.
Healthier food often costs more, and trying to monitor kids’ weight can be difficult, especially when they reach their teens and shun parental control, Bradley said. But taking youngsters away from their parents “definitely seems too extreme,” she said.
Dr. Lainie Ross, a medical ethicist at the University of Chicago, said: “There’s a stigma with state intervention. We just have to do it with caution and humility and make sure we really can say that our interventions are going to do more good than harm.”

Jessica Alba fears she’ll never get her pre-mommy body back, and she can’t understand how other celebrity moms lose their babyweight.
The star, who gave birth to baby Honor in 2008, is expecting a second child later this summer, and she worries she has another battle ahead to drop the pounds.
And Alba admits she’s still having a hard time accepting that someone like supermodel Gisele Bundchen can drop the pregnancy pounds and flawlessly flaunt a bikini in a matter of weeks after giving birth.
She tells Allure magazine, “I can’t ever get down to the weight I was before I had Honor… My body’s just different. The jeans just sort of zip up differently, and things hang differently. It’s a miracle what happens, but you definitely are different afterward. Unless you’re Gisele.”
However, Alba insists pregnancy has had at least one positive effect on her body – she’s now more comfortable with her own sexuality.
She adds, “It wasn’t something I embraced until I had my daughter. I saw how incredible and amazing it is to be a woman and to be able to create a life. There’s a reason why certain areas of the body are desirable – because it all leads to reproduction.”

We’ve witnessed Jennifer Hudson’s journey from American Idol to an Oscar and Grammy Award Winner all within the last seven years and now with her new slimmer figure, she’s getting more attention than ever before. J Hud sat down with Daily Mail recently and discussed everything from her weight loss and it’s benefits, to being an inspiration and growth in her career Check out a few excerpts below:
Would you agree that the odds are against plus-size women in the entertainment industry?
/> No, because I was doing OK before. But the truth is, so many more opportunities open up when you’re on the other side, as I am now. I’d no idea what I was missing out on. It’s like a whole other world. Suddenly every designer wants to dress you. It’s like, “You look amazing! Please, choose a dress. Have a bag. And what about shoes?” I mean, wow! id="more-143600">Is all the flattery, not to mention the freebies, hard to resist?
/> My look is led by what I feel good in. If I’m not comfortable in something, I won’t wear it – no matter whose name is on the label. To be able to sing at this level is a blessing in itself, and I got publicity for what I was doing before I dieted. But never to this extent. Now, whenever I open a magazine, I seem to see myself there. And I get to dress up every day and have someone take photos of it all. For someone who loves fashion, it’s like living the dream. Of course there are those mornings when I think, “Please don’t look at me right now!” But you just have to pull yourself together, get out there and do your job. I mean, how lucky am I to be in this position?
On being an inspiration to others
/> I’ve never heard the word “inspiration” as often as I have this past year. I get stopped in the street, in airports, everywhere, by people saying, “You’re my inspiration,” and I don’t begin to know how to respond. What did I do to deserve it and what do I say? Like with the weight loss… I’d no idea so many people were watching me or that they cared. On her fearless, go-getting attitude being the reason behind her career
/> Don’t block your blessings. Don’t let doubt stop you from getting where you want to be.” Those were the lessons that I took from American Idol. “OK, from now on I refuse to let anyone interrupt the vision I have for myself.” Sometimes I think we hurt ourselves by being too aware of the challenges. It can be better not to know. With Dreamgirls, I had absolutely no idea what I was letting myself in for until I was out there on the set.
